Near death experiences, what do they mean?
by sleepy innear death experiences, what do they mean?
anyway there was a resent disscusion of this phenonema on the telly.now i'm not concerning myself here with is there life after death but with this point, when people have near death experiences they are measured to be brain dead, no activity can be measured in the brain, yet many report seeing what was happening to them or voices and visions.if this is true then consciousness is continuing while the brain is inactive.this is not sleep , where the brain is active , but the brain is to all intents and purposes dead.
if, and i say if this is true, then consciousness is not solely linked to brain activity.that would have major implecations as to the nature of consciousness.where exactly doeas our consciousness reside?is the brain just a means for it to recieve information and in fact consciousness does not exist there but works throught it instead.this does not have to mean we have an imortal soul etc, but for example, maybe hidden dimentions in space could be the source of our consciousness,or someting else, not just the world we are aware of.

20 year old JW dead in USA - AJWRB responds
by Lee Elder inon thursday september 5th, we learned that a 20 year old jehovahs witness (jw) named collins stephens had died in an intensive care unit in little rock, arkansas.
for us, this tragedy is heightened by the knowledge that something as simple as a transfusion of red cells might well have saved collins life by allowing physicians to repair his damaged heart and aorta.. we know that collin was in an accident and that he survived for over ten days in a drug induced coma.
we know that physicians worked feverishly to keep him alive and build up his blood count.

> I'm more curious as to whether or not the Watchtower would become involved from a legal perspective - providing representation in court for parents who want to refuse a transfusion for their child. Does their stance on a minor's "right" to make medical decisions flip-flop based on that minor's adherence to doctrine?
The WTS will take up a court battle if it helps set precedent that is useful to them. They have no interest in individual rights as such.

Yes, SS, the WTS is now suddenly fighting for teens "rights." The Edmonton Sun wrote this in the article noted above:
"A lawyer for Bethany says he will follow her wishes by continuing her fight in court for the right of minors to make their own medical decisions.
Lawyer David Day says Bethany made him promise he would do all he could to finish the fight she started.
To back up her request, she reminded him of a videotape she made earlier in the summer, to be used in court if she died, Day said.
On Tuesday, Day and another lawyer who worked for the Calgary teen, David Gnam, will appear in family and youth court before Judge Alberta Vickery to argue for the Calgary teenager's case to continue to be heard despite her death.
"She told me shortly prior to her death that she wished me to pursue all reasonable legal avenues, right through to the Supreme Court of Canada, in an effort to vindicate her charter rights," said Day.
"She wanted the right to make her own medical decisions as a mature young person."Edited to add:
We know that this is not about Bethanys rights; this is about the WTSs concern over its own rights.

Welcome to you and to all new ones reading this thread.
If you live in an area with other former JWs, you will likely find some of them excellent friends, because only they will fully understand what you have been through as a JW. If you have not read Ray Franz's books, you will find them most helpful in your exit process. Lurking here and elsewhere is helpful too, as you have already found out.
Pleae keep us posted on the progres of your fade from the slavery that is the JW life.
Warm regards,
Sam

Should you carry "I Want Blood" card
by MegaDude inchatting with elsewhere last week, i was surprised and not surprised that he wanted legal documents drawn up that would give medical and legal power of attorney over him not to his family, but rather to ex-jws he knows if he became incapacitated or was killed.
elsewhere is a devout atheist for one and the very thought of his parents having a jw minister (or any minister for that matter) saying a few words over his final resting place is a repugnant thought to him.
i truly understand that.

Excellent points MD. I have the same concern. Recently I spoke to my primary physician and told her of the dilemma within my family, most are JWs. She promised to put a note in my chart to the effect that, if necessary, blood products would be used if I was unable to give consent.
Your idea of creating (sorry for using that word Elsewhere) a paper trail is also wise, it seems to me.
Thanks for the suggestion.
